Srinagar, Aug 12: To help them learn the news production process, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), organised an industrial tour for its students to Rising Kashmir office at Press Enclave here on Monday.
The educational trip, which was coordinated by Dr. Rabia Noor, Assistant Professor, DJMC, IUST, was a part of the industry-connect initiative of IUST. Students from both the senior and junior batches participated in the event.
Students were given a tour of various sections of the news organisation, including news room, editorial section, layout section, multi-media room, IT section, advertising and marketing section, and administrative section. The aim of the tour was to help the students understand organisational structure of daily newspapers as well functioning of various departments.
Meanwhile, students interacted with senior reporters, editors and layout designers of the organisation. While interacting with students, chief reporter, Rising Kashmir, Irfan Yattoo, shared some practical tips on reporting with the students. He advised them to excel in their respective areas of reporting. He emphasised on cross-verification and safeguarding one’s sources.
“You don’t need to rush for a front-page byline; you can start with smaller stories and learn from the beginning,” he told students, adding that one should earn a byline rather than plagiarising, which is unethical.
Sub-editor of the organisation, Farzana Syed, deliberated upon the significance of editing in news production, wherein only verified and ready-to-print content reaches the audience.
Among others who interacted with students included Umar Raina, senior reporter, Sameer Bhat, chief layout designer, Shafat Malik, beat reporter and Mir Shaista Zehra, multimedia reporter.
