Pahalgam (Anantnag), Jan 02: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday emphasised the efforts being made to ensure Jammu and Kashmir remains a year-round tourist destination. Speaking at the inauguration of the Pahalgam Winter Carnival, he outlined plans to expand such events across the region to promote tourism throughout the year.
The Winter Carnival, organised by the Department of Tourism J&K, began at 4 pm on January 2 at the Pahalgam Club. Traditionally held on New Year’s Eve, this year’s event was postponed to observe a period of mourning following the passing of former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.
“Efforts are being made to ensure J&K remains a year-round tourist destination. To achieve this, festivals like these (Pahalgam Winter Carnival) should be held across different locations,” Omar Abdullah stated. He added that, starting with Pahalgam, similar events would be organized in Gulmarg, Doodhpathri, Sonamarg, and other winter destinations to attract both domestic and international visitors.
“Local residents will also benefit and enjoy these festivals,” he said, highlighting the broader economic and social impact of such events.
When asked about a recent statement by Agha Ruhullah, who had suggested that statehood is less important than Article 370 for Kashmir, Omar responded with characteristic directness. “I’m sorry, but I don’t have time to spend 24 hours a day on social media. I’m busy working and don’t know who said what and where,” he remarked.
Omar also responded to criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following his press conference, stating, “Really? That’s fine. There is still a lot of time left. Let’s see who ultimately fails. They failed in the elections. First, they should accept their failure. Only then can they comment on ours. They failed just two and a half months ago.”
Former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who attended the event, praised the carnival, calling it a “wonderful evening” and expressed hope that it would encourage more tourism to the region. “It was a great opportunity to attend this Winter Festival and listen to so many talented artists,” he said.
He also spoke about the importance of supporting local talent, saying, “I’m happy everyone here had a good time, and I hope more tourists will visit Jammu and Kashmir, boosting business and tourism. I think we should promote them and bring them forward. That’s our responsibility.”
