Srinagar, Nov 13: The Meteorological Department on Monday predicted rain and snowfall in Kashmir’s higher reaches and some parts of Jammu division starting Thursday.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of MeT Srinagar, said that light rain and snow are likely between November 14-15, particularly in higher areas of Kashmir and a few places in Jammu.
On November 16, light rain and snow in higher reaches are expected in scattered areas, while the weather will remain dry from November 17-23.
Ahmad said that there was a slight improvement in minimum temperatures across Kashmir due to cloudiness. He added that shallow to moderate fog is expected to continue in many parts of Kashmir until November 23.
The MeT department warned of potential disruptions to surface transportation due to light snowfall over Zojila, Razdan pass, Sadhna pass, Sinthan top, and Mughal Road on November 15. Tourists and travelers have been advised to plan accordingly for November 14-15.
On Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir experienced dry and partially cloudy weather across the Valley. The entire region was shrouded in dense fog during early morning and evening, resulting in a chilly breeze and a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures.
The dense fog also hit vehicular traffic during both morning and evening hours and reduced visibility prompted vehicles to exercise caution, as many were seen operating with headlights on for increased safety.
As per MeT data, Srinagar recorded 15.9 0°C as maximum temperature and 7.6 as minimum temperature, Similarly Qazigund 16.0 and min 4.6, Pahalgam 12.8 and 1.0 as min, Kupwara 16.8 and 4.8 as min, Gulmarg 6.8 as max and -0.8 degree Celsius as minimum temperature.
On Wednesday, the region experienced dry and partly cloudy weather, with dense fog in the morning and evening, leading to a drop in daytime temperatures. The fog reduced visibility, affecting traffic and prompting vehicles to use headlights for safety.
Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 15.9°C and a minimum of 7.6°C. Other areas, including Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kupwara, and Gulmarg, reported varying temperatures.
In terms of traffic, subject to weather and road conditions, passenger and private cars (LMVs) and heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed to travel on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) and other routes, with regulated timings for specific roads like Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri and Mughal Road. Travel restrictions will apply after cut-off timings for safety.
Similarly, LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil at 1330 hrs to 1900 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing.
LMVs followed by HMVs upto 10 tyre) on Mughal road shall be allowed from both sides viz. from Poonch towards Shopian and vice versa. These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgalla (Buffliaz) and Herpora (Shopian) at 0700 hrs. upto 1700 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut of timing.
Similarly, only LMVs will be allowed on Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road from both sides viz from Anantnag towards Kishtwar and vice versa. These vehicles shall be allowed from Daksum and Chingam (Chatroo) between 0900 hrs to 1500 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing, the spokesman said.
