Srinagar, Oct 05: Senior Vice President of Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference and former minister Abdul Gani Vakil on Thursday expressed deep concern over the “dire lack of essential facilities” in Sopore town.
During his tour of various wards, including Mahrajpora, Arampora, Cinkipora, Muslimpir, and Sheer Colony, Vakil highlighted the pressing issues faced by the residents, such as the acute shortage of drinking water, inadequate drainage systems, and deteriorating road conditions.
According to a statement, Vakil alleged that the town’s residents have long been neglected by successive governments, resulting in their legitimate grievances. He urged the government to prioritise the concerns of the people, particularly the recent protests that underscored their urgent needs.
He expressed dismay at the “ineffective functioning” of the current municipal establishment, which, according to him, has failed to contribute meaningfully to the town’s development and has instead drained public resources without delivering tangible outcomes.
“The people of Sopore have suffered for far too long due to the lack of basic amenities. It is imperative for the LG administration and relevant authorities to promptly address their genuine demands. The recent protests are a clear indication of the community’s frustration, which cannot be ignored any longer,” he said.
The former minister urged the government to hear the voices of citizens and take swift action to ensure the provision of essential services. He demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds within the Sopore municipality.
“These funds were purportedly utilised for unproductive schemes that do not exist in reality, urging transparency and accountability in financial matters,” he said.
The PC leader urged the LG administration and concerned authorities to take immediate steps to rectify the situation in Sopore.
