Srinagar, Sep 05: Chairman Peoples Democratic Front and former minister Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen has expressed deep concern over the ongoing power crisis in Jammu and Kashmir. He has urged the government to take immediate measures to ameliorate the situation before the winter season intensifies the challenges faced by the people.
In a statement issued here, Hakeem highlighted the serious consequences of frequent unscheduled power cuts due to severe shortages. He mentioned the inconvenience caused to the residents and urged the government to promptly procure additional power quotas.
Yaseen stressed that all necessary steps must be taken to address the prevailing severe power crisis, attributed to low power generation from local hydroelectric projects owing to reduced water discharge in rivers. The dry weather conditions prevailing for several months should have prompted advance planning from authorities to prevent the current power crisis, he said.
The PDF chairman appealed to the government to proactively tackle power challenges in anticipation of the approaching winter season. “It is imperative that our people do not suffer due to power shortages, especially during harsh winters,” he said.
The former minister said the unprecedented power crisis contradicts the government’s assurance of round-the-clock power supply, particularly in metered areas. The present hardships faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir necessitate immediate action to improve the power scenario, he said.
“It is disheartening to see Jammu and Kashmir, with its rich power generation potential, grappling with such a crisis. The region should have been self-reliant and power surplus,” Hakeem lamented.
The PDF chairman urged all stakeholders to collaborate effectively to resolve the power crisis and ensure a stable and uninterrupted power supply for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
