Kargil, Aug 26: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The new districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang.
The new districts have been allocated between the Leh and Kargil divisions, with three districts (Nubra, Changthang, and Sham) falling under Leh and two (Zanskar and Drass) under Kargil.
Ladakh is a very large union territory in terms of area. At present, Ladakh has two districts – Leh and Kargil. It is one of the least populated areas of India. Being extremely difficult and inaccessible, at present the district administration was facing many difficulties in reaching the grassroots level. After the formation of these districts, now all the public welfare schemes of the Central Government and Ladakh Administration will be able to reach the people easily and more and more people will be able to take advantage of them. This important decision of MHA will prove to be very useful in the all-round development of Ladakh.
Along with giving “in-principle approval” for the formation of five new districts, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the Ladakh administration to form a committee to assess various aspects related to the formation of new districts, such as headquarters, boundaries, structure, creation of posts, any other aspect related to the formation of district etc. and submit its report within three months. After receiving the report of the said committee, the Union Territory of Ladakh will send the final proposal regarding the creation of new districts on the basis of this report to the Home Ministry for further action.
Meanwhile, renowned Social Activist from Kargil Sajjad Kargili, Incharge of Political Affairs at Jamiat Ulama, has responded to the recent announcement by Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory of Ladakh. While welcoming the Government of India’s decision, Kargili has raised concerns about the exclusion of the Suru Sankoo and Shakar Chiktan regions from district status.
While expressing his support for the creation of new districts, he emphasized the need for an amendment to include the Suru Sankoo and Shakar Chiktan regions as a district. “Not granting district status to these regions is an injustice towards the people of that area, who have been advocating for this recognition for a long time,” Kargili stated.
He further highlighted the importance of ensuring that these newly announced districts are fully functional, with all powers and responsibilities effectively transferred. Kargili cautioned against the creation of districts that merely resemble the sub-divisions established in the past, where powers were not transferred, rendering them ineffective.
Dorjey Angchuk, the State Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the people of Ladakh following the Ministry of Home Affairs’ historic decision to create five new districts in the Union Territory.
The newly announced districts—Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang—are expected to significantly enhance governance and deliver improved services and opportunities to the residents of Ladakh. This strategic move reflects the government’s commitment to the region’s development and its people.
Dorjey Angchuk expressed profound gratitude to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home Minister Amit Shah for their unwavering dedication to the progress of Ladakh. He remarked, “This decision marks a pivotal moment in the history of Ladakh. The creation of these new districts will not only strengthen the administrative framework but also ensure that the benefits of development reach every corner of our beautiful region.”
Haji Anayat Ali, Prabhari BJP Kargil, has extended his congratulations to the people of Drass, Zanskar, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang on the announcement of the creation of five new districts in Ladakh. This significant decision reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to the development and empowerment of every region in the Union Territory.
