Srinagar, Sep 05: Sajad Lone-led Jammu and Kashmir Peoples’ Conference (JKPC) released its party manifesto on Thursday, focusing on the restoration of Article 370 and addressing key social, economic, and political issues in the valley.
Lone, addressing the media persons here, said the JKPC remains determined to “restore the dignity and rights” of the people of Jammu & Kashmir. “We are committed to fighting for the pre-2019 constitutional position for Jammu & Kashmir. We will leave no stone unturned in restoring the honour and dignity of our people,” he said.
He reaffirmed that the party would use all available platforms, including legislative and legal means, to restore Article 370 and work towards the return of full statehood for Jammu & Kashmir.
The manifesto also outlines a broad range of reforms to “ensure justice, development and stability” in the region.
One of the standout promises of the manifesto is the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the alleged rigging of the 1987 elections, which the party believes is the “root cause of the socio-political unrest that has plagued Kashmir since then”.
Describing the 1987 elections as the “great robbery”, the JKPC vowed to hold accountable those responsible for undermining democracy at that time. “The 1987 election rigging remains a critical moment in Kashmir’s history, and we believe addressing it will pave the way for lasting peace,” the party said.
The manifesto goes beyond political promises, addressing pressing issues that affect everyday life in Jammu & Kashmir. The JKPC pledged to end the practice of blacklisting Kashmiris by security agencies, which has often denied them access to government jobs, passports, and contracts. The party condemned these practices as “unfair and harmful to individuals and families who are being punished without proper justification”.
Another major point is the commitment to repealing the Public Safety Act (PSA) and other laws which the party considers draconian. The JKPC said it aims to reform the legal system to ensure fairness, justice, and respect for human rights.
The manifesto also outlines an ambitious economic revival plan, with a special focus on job creation and boosting local industries like handicrafts and horticulture. It highlights the importance of empowering women and youth, ensuring they play a significant role in the region’s progress.
JKPC also proposed rehabilitation programs for former militants, seeking their reintegration into society. The party underscored the need for a balance between security measures and human rights, stating that “peace cannot come at the cost of injustice”.
In another bold move, the party called for the establishment of a truth and reconciliation commission to investigate alleged human rights abuses and compensate the victims of conflict. “This is a step towards healing the wounds of the past,” the manifesto claims, adding that it will help build trust between the people and the government.
The JKPC pledged to improve school infrastructure and teacher training, and reduce the dropout rate. It also promised to address the healthcare challenges in rural areas.
Sajad Lone, who came third in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, said the manifesto is “not just a set of promises but a comprehensive vision for restoring the region’s dignity and status”. “Our manifesto addresses the root causes of unrest, and we are dedicated to safeguarding the rights of our people while working towards long-term socio-economic progress,” he said.
