Jammu, Jan 24: Eight persons have been booked by police in Ramban and Reasi districts for posting objectionable content on social media related to the alleged desecration of the Ram Temple at Ayodhya.
SSP Reasi, Amit Gupta told Rising Kashmir that three individuals have been booked in Reasi for posting objectionable posts on social media, resulting in the registration of two FIRs.
Additionally, three separate FIRs have been filed in Ramban district against various persons for similar offences, he added.
“Acting promptly under the guidance of SSP Ramban, Mohita Sharma, three (03) different FIRs under No. 26/2024, 27/2024 and 28/2024 have been registered at Police Station, Ramban under relevant sections of the law,” said a police spokesperson in a statement.
SSP Gupta urged the public to refrain from sharing any objectionable content on social media that could disrupt peace and harmony in the area. He said that all social media platforms are under scrutiny, and strict action will be taken against those who post provocative and hateful content.
The police’s swift response comes after a boy from the Chatroo area of Kishtwar in the Jammu region was detained for posting derogatory content about the Ram Temple on social media earlier this week.
Law enforcement authorities, both at the national and state levels, actively monitor social media for potential violations. In case of objectionable content, individuals can be booked under sections such as 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, etc.) or 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC.
Authorities have increasingly been taking strict measures to curb the spread of misinformation, hate speech and any content that may disrupt public harmony.
Police has time and again urged the social media users to adhere to community guidelines, exercise discretion and avoid engaging in activities that may lead to legal consequences.
