Shopian, Jan 24: Secretary, Municipal Committee, Shopian, Assadullah has appealed to people to cooperate in keeping public toilets clean.
Highlighting the efforts made by the municipality, Assadullah said an annual expenditure of nearly 6 lakh rupees has been dedicated to maintaining cleanliness in public toilet facilities.
“We have dedicated caretakers to ensure daily sanitation routines. However, despite these efforts, the lack of public responsibility remains a critical challenge,” he said.
The Secretary said it was disheartening to see the “unethical and unconscious” behaviour of some individuals while using public toilets. He specifically condemned the practices of smoking and spitting inside the public washrooms, along with the failure to flush properly after use.
“These actions not only compromise hygiene but also render the efforts of sanitation workers futile,” Assadullah said, adding, “We are putting in our best efforts, but it’s disheartening to see the state of these toilets.”
He added, “Public toilets are meant for everyone’s benefit, and to keep them neat and clean requires a collective effort. If we truly value these facilities, we need to treat them with respect and use them responsibly.”
The officer urged residents to refrain from littering, smoking and spitting inside these facilities. He also encouraged people to report any instances of vandalism or misuse to the municipal authorities.
