Budgam, Aug 23: Despite the R&B Division Beerwah declaring the Bailey Bridge of Beerwah town unsafe for heavy vehicles, heavy vehicles still ply along the bridge posing a risk to the passengers.
The locals from Beerwah town told Rising Kashmir that since the 2014 floods, Bailey Bridge has been repaired by the R&B department, while the bridge is used on a daily basis.
“This year, the bridge has also been maintained. However it was declared unsafe for the heavy vehicles,” locals said.
Javid Ahmad, a student, said that the roads and buildings department has also banned heavy traffic movement on the bridge and declared the Bailey Bridge unsafe for heavy vehicles.
“The Bailey Bridge is not in a condition where it can tolerate the load of heavy vehicles; that is the main reason this bridge has been declared unsafe for heavy vehicles,” he said.
The locals said that the government must take the necessary steps and construct another bridge at this location. As this is the main bridge that connects Beerwah sub-division to the district headquarters and different areas of Budgam district.
An official from the R&B Division Beerwah, said that the traffic movement of heavy vehicles on the Bailey Bridge was stopped. Some vehicles have also broken the barricades that were installed on the bridge.
“We have also submitted a detailed project report (DPR) to the higher authorities for the construction of a new bridge at this location,” an official said.
Despite declared unsafe, heavy traffic continues on Beerwah’s Bailey Bridge
