JAMMU, Aug 23: In a landmark move aimed at bolstering safety, the Government Medical College and Hospital-Jammu (GMC&H-J) has become the first hospital in the country to deploy armed security in its Emergency ward. This decision follows a series of violent incidents involving patient attendants and medical staff over recent months.
The GMC-Jammu administration, in collaboration with local police, decided to introduce armed guards to protect healthcare workers and ensure a secure environment in the Emergency ward. The initiative comes after several months of escalating confrontations, which prompted urgent action to safeguard medical personnel.
“The safety of our staff and patients is paramount,” said a spokesperson for GMC-Jammu. “After thorough discussions with the police, we concluded that armed security is essential to address the recurring issues and provide a safe working environment for our medical professionals.”
Starting immediately, a total of 12 armed guards will be stationed in the Emergency ward, with four guards per shift. Each shift will consist of one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and three constables, ensuring round-the-clock security. The deployment will be managed by the 3rd Battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Convoy No. 713.
