Srinagar, Aug 27: Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir has declared a net worth of nearly 16 crore rupees in his affidavit, making him one of the wealthiest candidates in south Kashmir for upcoming assembly elections. Talat Majid Alaie, a former Jamaat-e-Islami member, is identified as the poorest candidate in the race.
Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former MP Hasnain Masoodi, with assets totalling over Rs 7 crore, trails behind. This is nearly a crore less than his 2019 Lok Sabha declaration.
According to affidavits submitted by G A Mir, his assets have seen a notable increase in his wealth since the 2014 assembly elections, where he declared assets worth Rs 13 crore. His current assets include over Rs 15 crore in immovable property, including inherited assets, and Rs 89 lakh in movable assets.
Mir, who is contesting from the Dooru seat, carries a liability of Rs 59 lakh due to a bank loan. His wife also holds assets exceeding Rs 1 crore.
Hasnain Masoodi follows with assets totalling over Rs 7 crore, nearly a crore less than his 2019 Lok Sabha declaration. His movable assets have decreased from over Rs 88 lakh in 2019 to Rs 13 lakh, while his immovable assets have increased to Rs 7 crore. His wife, a retired school teacher, has assets valued at Rs 1.75 crore. Masoodi is contesting from Pampore.
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Sartaj Madni has shown a modest increase in his wealth. His movable assets are now Rs 2.62 lakh, and his immovable assets total Rs 3.44 crore.
Madni’s liabilities have decreased from Rs 11 lakh in 2014 to Rs 5 lakh. Madni is running for the Devsar seat.
NC’s leader Sakeena Itoo, contesting from D.H. Pora has declared assets worth over Rs 2.20 crore. Her holdings include over Rs 1 crore in movable property and Rs 1.20 crore in immovable property.
CPI (M) leader M Y Tarigami has reported a decline in wealth, with his total assets now valued at nearly Rs 1 crore, down from Rs 1.22 crore in 2014. His assets include Rs 92 lakh in inherited immovable property and over Rs 8 lakh in movable property. Tarigami is the Congress-NC alliance’s joint candidate from Kulgam.
PDP’s Mehboob Beg, contesting from Anantnag, has seen a significant increase in assets, which have nearly tripled since 2014. His movable assets have risen to Rs 80 lakh, while his immovable assets now total Rs 5.35 crore.
Iltija Mufti, daughter of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and running for the Srigufwara-Bijbehara constituency, has declared a modest net worth of Rs 28 lakh. Her assets include Rs 3 lakh in cash and Rs 25 lakh in jewellery.
Waheed ur Rehman Para of the PDP, contesting from Pulwama, has declared assets worth Rs 2.60 crore, showing steady financial growth. His holdings include Rs 11 lakh in movable assets and over Rs 2.58 crore in immovable assets.
Ex-Jamaat-e-Islami member Talat Majid Alaie emerges as the poorest candidate with a negative net worth.
Alaie, also running from Pulwama, has only Rs 20,000 in cash and a car valued at Rs 6.7 lakh, along with liabilities exceeding Rs 7 lakh from a car loan and a personal loan.
Around 183 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for 16 assembly constituencies across four districts in Kashmir, which will vote in the first phase of the J&K Assembly elections. The elections are scheduled for September 18.
