New Delhi, May 3 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday in the national capital for a key discussion on various important issues, with a particular focus on the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. This marked the first meeting between the two leaders since the April 22 attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives in the Baisaran Valley area of the Pahalgam tourist resort.
The meeting, which took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence, lasted approximately 30 minutes. During the discussion, CM Abdullah briefed PM Modi on the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir in the aftermath of the attack. Abdullah expressed the deep sense of grief and outrage felt by the people of the region. He strongly condemned the attack, labeling it as a “heinous act of terror” aimed at destabilizing peace and harmony in the region.
The Chief Minister also conveyed the strong sense of solidarity among the people of Jammu and Kashmir in rejecting terrorism and violence. He mentioned the spontaneous protests in the region, where people expressed their disapproval of the attack, signaling the unity of the local population against such acts of violence. These protests, officials said, were notable as they marked the first such public outcry since the beginning of terrorism in the region in 1989.
He also highlighted the sacrifice of pony ride operator Syed Adil Hussain Shah, who had tried to snatch a weapon from one of the terrorists in a courageous attempt to protect the tourists. The impact on tourism was also discussed, with Abdullah outlining the potential consequences of the attack on the local economy. The Amarnath Yatra, a major religious pilgrimage scheduled to begin on July 3, was also a topic of concern. The Yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims each year, is set to take place along the traditional 48-kilometer Pahalgam route and the 14-kilometer Baltal route.
After Pahalgam attack, PM Modi, in response, vowed to bring those responsible for the attack to justice. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), the PM stated: “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice…they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger.”
Meanwhile, in a display of political unity, the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly passed a unanimous resolution on April 28, condemning the Pahalgam attack in the strongest possible terms. The resolution reaffirmed the region’s commitment to upholding peace and combating terrorism. It also reflected the collective will of the people’s representatives in standing united against violence and ensuring the region remains peaceful.
