Trehgam is a small town in the Kupwara district of the Indian Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. In front of them is a famous pond, the main source of water for almost half a dozen nearby villages. Sir Walter Lawrence in his famous book The Valley of Kashmir writes, “The pond of Trehgam indicates the utmost beauty of Kashmir.”
This unusual sight is not just a symbol of the peaceful coexistence of Hindus and Muslims in the town but is also a testament to the centuries-old syncretic culture of Kashmir.

According to the elders of the town, the decision to build the two places of worship side by side was taken to promote communal harmony and brotherhood in the locality. The community wanted to send a message of peace and tolerance to the rest of the world.

A local, Shoib Ahmad Najjar, said that the mosque and temple in Trehgam are an inspiring example of communal harmony in India. The coexistence of a grand mosque and a Hindu temple in Trehgam village is a shining example of such harmony.

Presently no Pandit family lives in the village. However, according to locals, from time to time, they do come to offer prayers in the temple. (ANI)
