Kulgam, Sep 27: A rigorous market checking drive was carried out on Wednesday in the Astan Bazar area of Kulgam town to ensure adherence to the Commodities Act ahead of the auspicious occasion of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW).
An official said that during the joint drive of the tehsil administration and municipality, the shopkeepers found in violation of prescribed norms were promptly issued fines, amounting to a total of 3500 rupees.
He said that rotten vegetables and fruits were also destroyed on the spot.
Bilal Ahmad, Tehsildar Kulgam, told Rising Kashmir that on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, the intensive drive was held in Kulgam town.
He said it is important that people get quality products at genuine rates. “Ensuring compliance with established norms, the drive was held to keep the rates in check, particularly during significant events like Eid-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW),” he said.
He said that four challans were issued, and two erring shopkeepers were sealed for violation of the Essential Commodities Act, of 1955.
The drives would be intensified in the coming days throughout the jurisdiction of the tehsil, he said.
