Budgam, Oct 04: Police on Wednesday said they apprehended two drug peddlers in central Kashmir’s Budgam district and seized a significant amount of contraband substances from their possession.
According to a police spokesperson, the arrest was made by officers from the Police Post Soibugh at a checkpoint set up at Hatharan. They intercepted a Scooty bearing registration Number PB10G-1225, driven by Harjeet Singh, son of Swarn Singh, a resident of Mayapur Ludhiana, currently residing at Bemina Srinagar.
Upon inspection, the police discovered approximately 6 kilograms of poppy straw-like substance concealed in a polythene bag. Harjeet Singh was promptly arrested and taken into custody. The vehicle used in the commission of the crime was also seized.
Simultaneously, another police party from Police Station Budgam, stationed at a checkpoint in Gariend, apprehended a suspicious individual carrying a nylon bag. Upon spotting the police, the suspect attempted to flee but was tactfully captured, the spokesperson said.
After inspection, the officers found approximately 10 kilograms and 300 grams of poppy straw-like substance concealed in the nylon bag. The suspect was identified as Devender Paul Singh, son of Gurdyal Singh, a resident of Kalan Ludhiana, Punjab, currently residing at Brick Kiln 71P.
Additionally, a search of the suspect’s dwelling, a Jhugi in brick kiln 71P, led to the discovery of an alcohol-like substance stored in 8 plastic containers and one drum hidden beneath the bricks, police said, adding that he too was taken into custody and transported to the police station.
The police have registered FIR numbers 281/2023 and 283/2023 under relevant sections of the law at Police Station Budgam.
“Investigations into the matter are underway,” the spokesperson said, adding, “The successful operation underscores the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring the safety and security of the region’s residents.”
