Srinagar, Aug 11: Director General of Police (DGP), J&K, Dilbag Singh on Friday said that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir has entered its final phase, with the current number of terrorists being the lowest on record. The law enforcement agencies will continue to grapple with the challenge of addressing the drug menace, he said.
Addressing mediapersons in Kupwara during ‘meri maati mera desh’ event, the DGP said that Jammu and Kashmir is making strides toward a journey of peace. He emphasised the substantial progress achieved in containing terrorism, resulting in the active terrorist count dwindling to double digits. He stated that these remaining terrorists will soon be effectively neutralised, DGP Singh said.
Addressing the current scenario, he said there is a need to confront the growing drug trade challenge through strategic actions.
While highlighting the prevailing situation, DGP Singh highlighted the surge in local participation in large-scale events. “These events, once constrained by cultural and religious considerations, now seamlessly foster communal engagement and harmony,” he said. DGP Singh said aiming to honour the memory of national heroes, the “Meri Matti Mera Desh” initiative has orchestrated diverse activities like “tiranga rallies” and educational programs across educational institutions and government offices in J&K.
DGP Singh also drew attention to the issue of drug trade, revealing a notable shift in Pakistan’s approach. He noted that after years of grappling with terrorism, Pakistan appears to have redirected its focus to what he termed a “drug war.”
He asserted that combating this new challenge demands resolute actions akin to those employed during the fight against terrorism. He expressed optimism about eradicating the drug issue from J&K, but underscored the necessity of robust collaboration from the populace, civil society, and the youth in particular.
During the event, DGP Singh inaugurated five commemorative buildings in Kupwara, constructed by the local police as a tribute to fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation’s welfare. He further revealed that the largest “tiranga rally” ever witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir is scheduled to take place on August 13. “As we gear up for August 15, fervent preparations are in full swing throughout Jammu and Kashmir. Meticulous planning meetings have been conducted to orchestrate the occasion. I have personally chaired a coordination meeting, and noteworthy inputs have been provided by the ADGP of Jammu, Kashmir, and the LG. All hands are on deck,” he said.
This year, our tiranga rallies take on a profound theme “meri maati mera desh.” Every district is dynamically arranging rallies in alignment with this theme, which holds significance at a national level as well. “Our primary motive is to pay homage to the indomitable sacrifices of our valiant martyrs. The newly inaugurated edifices in Kupwara stand as testaments to the gallantry of these heroes,” he added.
During his visit to the frontier district, DGP Singh chaired a joint security review meeting, presided over a darbar of jawans and officers. Accompanied by ADG Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar and IGP Headquarters PHQ Bhim Sen Tuti, the DGP was received by DIG North Kashmir Range, Vivek Gupta, SSP Kupwara Yougal Kumar Manhas, SP Handwara Sheema Nabi Qasba and other senior officers and was presented guard of honour on his arrival. He visited the martyrs memorial and paid tribute to the martyrs.
The DGP while chairing the officers meeting complimented police, Army and other security agencies for their commitment in making Jammu and Kashmir terror-free destination.
