60 Independent candidates file nominations
Srinagar, Sept 04: With only one day left for filing nomination papers, 148 nominations have been submitted by 144 candidates across 26 Assembly constituencies for the second phase of elections scheduled for September 25, according to details available on the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) website.
Independent candidates, with over 60 independents have filed their nominations across various constituencies.
In Kangan, which is reserved for ST candidates, three candidates have filed their nominations so far. Central Shalteng and Rajouri constituencies have highest number of independent candidates who have filed nominations so far.
Several prominent political figures have also filed nomination papers, including former ministers who have held key positions in previous governments. Omar Abdullah, Vice President of National Conference (NC), has filed his nomination from Ganderbal. Ali Mohammad Sagar of NC, who previously served as the Minister of Rural Development, has filed his nomination from Khanyar. AsieaNaqash, a former MLA and Minister of State for Health and Medical Education, is representing the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from Hazratbal.
AltafBukhari, President of the Apni Party, has filed his nomination from Channapora, while Sanjay Saraf of RashtriyaLokJanshakti Party is contesting from Habbakadal. The elections are also notable for the presence of multiple candidates from the same party in certain constituencies, such as Lalchowk, where both the Apni Party and the PDP have fielded covering candidates.
Some constituencies have witnessed multiple nominations from the same party. In Ganderbal, Tariq Ahmad Zargar of RashtriyaLokJanshakti Party has filed two nominations. In Khansahib, People’s Democratic Front Chairman Hakeem Yaseen has filed nominations for both Khansahib and Char-I-Sharief constituencies.
The J&K Assembly elections are being held in three phases, with voting scheduled for September 18, 25 and October 01. Counting which was earlier scheduled on Oct 04 will now be held on October 8.
