Srinagar, Feb 02: The Jammu and Kashmir State Council of Educational Research and Training (JKSCERT) on Thursday said that there shall be a School Based Assessment (SBA) scheme for the first five foundation stages of the students, to achieve subject specific learning outcomes.
According to a document that lies with Rising Kashmir, at the foundational stage of 5 years, the scheme shall be conducted by the Head of Schools for the students to have achieved subject-specific learning outcomes and foundational reading skills as per NIPUN Bharat guidelines.
As per the scheme, at pre-school or Anganwadi level comprising three years, the students shall recognize letters, sounds, simple words consisting of two-three alphabets and numerals up to 10. Also, the students shall be able to identify shapes and objects and arrange numbers and occurrence of events in a sequence.
For Grade 1st, the students shall be able to read small sentences consisting at least 4-5 simple words in an age-appropriate unknown text. Also, the students shall be able to perform addition and substation.
Likewise, for Grade 2, the students shall be able to read with meaning 45-60 words per minute, write numbers up to 999 and do subtraction up to 99.
The aim of the assessment at the foundational stage is early identification of learning gaps at each foundational stage including children with special needs so that there can be possibilities of early intervention through referral to specialists.
According to the document, “School Based Assessment (SBA) at the foundational stage should be stress-free and largely through qualitative observation based on performance of the child in a multitude of experience and activities and tools and techniques should be used as envisaged in exemplars prescribed by NCERT and SCERT in SBA document.”
It also mentions that the teachers are required to use different techniques to evaluate the children, identify their strengths, needs, interests and preferences.
