Shopian, Mar 17 : Snow clearance operations are currently underway on the historic Mughal Road, linking Shopian district in Kashmir with the Rajouri and Poonch districts in Jammu.
Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) in the Mechanical Engineering Department (MED), Abdul Rehman, informed Rising Kashmir that the clearance process commenced on March 9, 2024, following the mobilization of machinery on March 8. As of now, approximately 30 kilometers of the road have been cleared with the assistance of six deployed machines.
Rehman emphasized the significant snowfall this year compared to the past two years, attributing it to the February snowfall, which left the road buried under fresh snow. He further noted that rising temperatures led to frequent avalanches in the region, particularly in the lower 24 kilometers, averaging one avalanche per kilometer. He highlighted that the area around Zaznar poses the highest risk of avalanches as the operation progresses.
The team aims to fully clear the road from snow by March 25th, aiming to restore vital connectivity that has been disrupted for the past couple of months. Typically closed in November-December, this year, the Mughal road was shut for vehicular movement in January due to an extended dry spell, which delayed the snowfall.
