In a remarkable turn of events, the remote regions of Kashmir Valley, including Ganderbal, have witnessed a significant overhaul in their power infrastructure following the abrogation of Article 370. Over the past nine years, the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s relentless efforts have brought about substantial improvements in the electricity transmission systems, including transformers, iron poles, and wires, that were previously in dire conditions. This commendable endeavor has not only elevated the quality of life for the local populace but also relieved them of persistent power-related hardships.
Notably, last year, the Power Development Department took a pivotal stride by installing approximately 50 new electricity transformers across the entire sub-district of Kangan. These transformers were funded by local Panchayats, in collaboration with the PDD Department, marking an unprecedented initiative that brought cheer to the local communities. The upgrade also encompassed two 63Kv transformers at Lal Pati and Tedwa Pati of Gund Ako, a testament to the dedication of authorities to enhance the power infrastructure in even the most remote corners.
Officials at the helm shared that their unwavering commitment to establishing a robust power system has been ongoing for several years. Their objective remains to ensure seamless power supply in every nook and cranny of the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory, with a particular focus on the remote areas. The installation of 63 KV transformers in Khan Mohalla Gund and New Colony Gund last year exemplifies their strides toward this goal, alleviating the longstanding power woes in these localities.
Residents of these regions expressed their elation, noting that the collaborative efforts of the PDD Department, Panchayat Bodies, District Development Councils (DDCs), and Block Development Councils (BDCs) have brought about a transformative change. The installation of new electricity transformers has, for the first time, reached the farthest corners of the Kashmir valley, fostering happiness and contentment among the people.
This laudable progress stems from the thoughtful decisions undertaken by the Jammu and Kashmir Government for the betterment of its citizens. The new Union Territory administration has embarked on an ambitious journey to propel substantial economic projects, fortify infrastructure, attract investments, and address pressing employment concerns, with the wholehearted support of the Central Government.
A watershed moment arrived on February 27 this year when Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated power infrastructure projects amounting to Rs 192 crore. These endeavors were augmented by Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed by KPDCL and JPDCL, collectively amounting to Rs 1814 crore and Rs 2174 crore. These MoUs fall under the aegis of the Restructured Development Support Scheme (RDSS), aimed at bolstering distribution infrastructure and ameliorating electricity supply across urban and rural domains. These transformative initiatives involve the establishment of new receiving stations and the augmentation of existing ones, promising a reliable and top-tier power supply.
The roster of inaugurated projects comprised 22 receiving stations, valued at Rs 50 crore, a Smart Metering project amounting to Rs 62.88 crore, and an innovative Smart Metering App – Smart Bill Sahuliyat. Additionally, a Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition system was implemented at a cost of Rs 79.27 crore. Officials from the Power Development Department elucidated that the RDSS scheme will usher in improved power infrastructure in areas still grappling with dilapidated transmission lines, iron poles, and related components. This ambitious initiative underscores the commitment to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, further fortified by the installation of meters.
The transformation of the power landscape in remote Kashmir Valley stands as a testament to the determination and visionary governance that has been in play. It is a narrative of progress, resilience, and the unyielding pursuit of public welfare.
