Srinagar, July 17: The Jammu and Kashmir Police along with Army in a joint operation have recovered two IEDs from Wodhpura, Handwara area of Kupwara district and averted major incident in the area, officials said.
A police officer said that based on a specific information, Army along with Handwara Police launched a swift and well-coordinated Search and Destruction Operation (SADO) at Wodhpura Forest on the wee hours of Monday.
“During the operation, two IEDs of approximately five and seven Kgs were recovered from Wodhpura Ridge near NH 701. The joint team immediately cordoned off the area with adequate security measures,” he said.
The officer said positive identification of IEDs were carried out by Indian Army’s highly trained explosive detection team equipped with explosive detectors & Army Dog.
“Further, the bomb disposal team executed a controlled detonation of IEDs, rendering them safe. A thorough search operation resumed by joint teams of Army and Handwara Police in the general area of Wodhpura Forest for possibility of any more IED or hiding terrorists,” he added.
The official said the prompt action by the joint team of security forces averted major incident in the area.
Another officer said that IED’s are planted along roadsides, buildings and other location has become a new challenge and each day Road Opening Parties (ROP’s) ensure sanitation of roads and highways.
“Our bomb squads are well trained to diffuse these IED’s within short period of time. Foreign terrorists are mostly trained for making IED’s and after finding a safer hiding place, OWG’s are being used to assemble explosives. During the past several months, 90 of the IEDs have been defused or destroyed,” he said.
