Srinagar, Aug 23: Jammu and Kashmir is set to implement home voting system for the upcoming assembly elections, aimed at assisting elderly voters who face mobility challenges.
Nodal Officer for media, Sapna Kotwal told Rising Kashmir that the initiative will allow seniors to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes, ensuring they are not excluded from the democratic process.
She said that the goal is to make the election process more accessible and inclusive for everyone. “By offering home voting, we ensure that elderly citizens who may have difficulty traveling to polling stations can still participate in the electoral process.”
She said that a team of election officials will visit the homes of eligible voters on election day, equipped with necessary voting materials and technology to securely record their votes.
The approach is designed to overcome barriers such as physical limitations and transportation issues that often hinder elderly voters, she added.
Sapna said that officials will be trained to handle the process smoothly and sensitively, ensuring a respectful and secure voting experience for elderly voters.
“ECI is committed to making sure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to cast their vote in a manner that suits their needs,” she added.
She further said that the introduction of home voting by ECI is expected to enhance voter turnout among the elderly, who have historically faced challenges in participating fully in elections.
The step by ECI is aimed at to make the voting process as seamless as possible for all segments of society, she added.
