Ganderbal, June 26: On the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Drug Department of Ganderbal has made a strong appeal to the youth to steer clear of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
Speaking to the media, Assistant Drug Controller of Ganderbal, Ms. Negeena Akhtar, highlighted the prevalence of banned psychotropic drugs, noting that 5 percent of these substances are particularly addictive. She emphasized the department’s success in enhancing surveillance and accountability by installing CCTV cameras and implementing a computerized billing system at local chemists.
Ms. Akhtar urged the youth to focus on their studies and stay away from drugs. She also addressed parents, advising them to monitor their children’s behavior closely and avoid putting undue psychological pressure on them, which could lead to drug use. She encouraged young people to participate in sports and strive for academic excellence, channeling their energy into positive pursuits.
Drug Inspector for Kangan/Lar, Ms. Hadiyah Shah, commended the department’s efforts to curb the sale of illicit drugs without proper prescriptions at local chemists. She reiterated the department’s zero-tolerance policy against those involved in the illegal drug trade.
The event, held in collaboration with the Government Degree College (GDC) Kangan and the Chemists and Distributors Association of Kangan and Ganderbal, aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of combating illicit trafficking. The Principal of GDC Kangan, who was the chief guest, along with other dignitaries such as Dr. Asif Qadri, Dr.Reehana, and Advocate Umar, attended the program alongside students from GDC.
Principal GDC Kangan emphasized that while drugs have legitimate medical uses, their misuse poses significant health risks to the youth. She urged young people to avoid drug abuse for their overall well-being.
