Srinagar, Sept 14: The surgeons from the Rotary Club of India (RCI) in collaboration with the health department Kashmir have conducted over 1200 surgeries in government hospitals of south Kashmir during a medical camp from September 03 to 13 which has brought relief to the patients.
Spokesperson Directorate of Health Services Kashmir, Dr Mir Mushtaq said that a total of 1,223 surgeries were performed across various hospitals, including the District Hospital Kulgam, DH Shopian, Associated Hospital GMC Anantnag, and DH Pulwama.
On September 3rd, surgeons from the Rotary Club of India arrived in the Kashmir Valley for the second consecutive year to conduct surgeries in South Kashmir over a 10-day period.
Patients frequently experience extended waiting times in hospitals for their surgeries, often resulting from a high volume of patients and a shortage of specialist doctors in rural healthcare facilities.
Mir said the surgeries conducted include ENT, ophthalmic, orthopedics, gynecology and general surgeries which brought much relief for the patients of south Kashmir.
These camps offered free or low-cost medical check-ups, consultations, and basic treatments to individuals who were unable to have easy access to healthcare facilities. The club often focuses on rural villages or urban slums, where healthcare disparities are more pronounced.
“Last year the club had conducted hundreds of surgeries in North Kashmir. Rotary Club India has a long history of organizing medical camps to provide healthcare services to underserved communities,” he said.
The spokesperson said these medical camps are usually staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who generously donate their time and expertise.
Rotary clubs also collaborate with local hospitals, clinics, and NGOs to ensure the success of these initiatives. Medical camps organized by the club are vital in promoting public health, raising awareness about preventable diseases, and improving the overall well-being of the communities they serve.
Last year, the Rotary Club organized a vital medical camp in north Kashmir which was a collaborative effort with the DHSK that brought together medical professionals, volunteers, and resources to provide essential healthcare services to the local population.
Last year’s medical and surgical camp, conducted from September 15th to September 20th, successfully addressed the healthcare needs of over 5,000 residents across several districts in North Kashmir.
