Srinagar, Nov 29: The families of seven agricultural university students, charged under UAPA for objectionable slogans following the Indian cricket team’s World Cup final loss, on Wednesday appealed Jammu and Kashmir Police and administration for leniency.
The families of the students met senior officials of police in Shuhuma area of the Ganderbal district and requested them for leniency.
Advocate Shafeeq, representing the seven families from Anantnag, Kulgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora while speaking to reporters after meeting senior officials of Ganderbal Police said that it was an unfortunate, uncalled for, and unwarranted incident. “We all condemn it. It should not have happened”, he added.
He said that the families requested the J&K administration and the police for leniency regarding the FIR filed against the students.
During their meeting with Ganderbal police, Shafeeq stated that they conveyed to the police that the students are intelligent, have qualified the NEET examination, and are pursuing BVSc degrees. “We told officials of Ganderbal Police that these students are from poor families and their careers are at risk”, he added.
Shafeeq said they appreciate the positive response from Ganderbal police who ensured support within the ambit of law to safeguard the careers of these students.
“I request the students to be united, concentrate on studies, and work towards their careers”, Shafeeq said.
Meanwhile, a Police official told Rising Kashmir that they are reviewing the cases that have been filed against the 7 students and all aspects are being taken care.
“Some provisions of the cases may be provoked. We assured the parents that everything will be done as per the provisions of the law”, he added.
FIR registered against NIT student for uploading sensitive content: Police
Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday registered a FIR against the student of National Institute of Technology (NIT) for uploading sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community.
In a post on X’ formerly Twitter, Srinagar Police wrote; “Police has taken cognizance of the incident of uploading of sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by one student of NIT, Hazratbal upon receipt of information from NIT authorities.Case FIR No. 156/23 u/s 295A,153A,153 IPC registered in in PS Nigeen on 28.11.23.”
“Common public is appealed to desist from spreading rumours/false information. They shouldn’t fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements. Legal action shall be taken against those who are found to be involved in provocative act/instigation.”, police said.
Cyber Kashmir Police Kashmir also advised all Social media handlers to refrain from posting provocative and inappropriate content on their social media.
Taking on to the microblogging platform X, Cyber Kashmir police wrote, “All Social Media users are advised to refrain from sharing provocative & inappropriate content from their handles/pages.
Cyber Police Kashmir has taken cognisance of instigative & provocative contents being shared on various social media handles/pages. Action under law is being initiated, reads the blog, the spokesman said.
Earlier on Tuesday, IGP Kashmir said that police received information about student protests at NIT Campus, discovering that the video, not originally created by the student but shared from a YouTuber, had offended religious sentiments.
“The Registrar intervened, educated the student, and legal action was initiated based on the Registrar’s request. Investigations are ongoing,” IGP Birdi said
The incident follows massive protests by NIT Srinagar students against alleged derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW) by a colleague of a different faith.
