With the onset of cold and dry spell, it is time that the administration steps up the protection against extreme weather conditions. This period of harsh weather is infamous as taking a toll on the health of residents. With the temperature dropping to several Celsius below zero, not only is the health of the people threatened but many inconveniences meet people when least expected – for instance the irregular supply of essentials due to bad weather conditions. For many people, the shortened daylight hours and the cold, harsh weather can bring about a sense of melancholy, often referred to as the ‘winter blues.’ It is a fact that Kashmir Valley is known for its long and severe winters, lasting from December to February, and often extending into early March. The freezing temperatures and persistent snowfall can make daily life challenging, leading to feelings of isolation, lethargy, and sadness. These feelings, if not addressed, can intensify into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons. It seems paradoxical that the same season that brings such beauty can also bring such melancholy. However, we must remember that these feelings aren’t inevitable and that there are effective strategies for combating the winter blues. During this period people at large must stay active. It’s easy to succumb to the coziness of our homes when the temperature dips. However, physical activity is proven to boost mood and alleviate symptoms of depression. Indoor exercises, yoga, or even a brisk walk during the sunniest part of the day can work wonders. Moreover, indulging in winter sports can not only keep us physically active but also help us appreciate the unique opportunities that winter provides. Furthermore, maintaining a healthy diet is crucial. Winter in Kashmir is a time for hearty meals and festive delicacies. While indulging occasionally is part of the joy of the season, we must ensure our daily diet is balanced and nutritious. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and B vitamins can help counter winter blues. Also, social connection remains essential. The winter season can sometimes lead to social isolation, which can further exacerbate feelings of loneliness and sadness. Organizing small gatherings with family or friends, participating in community events, or volunteering can help maintain social bonds. Above all, it is important to acknowledge our feelings. If the winter blues seem overwhelming or extend beyond the winter months, seeking help from a mental health professional is a crucial step. There is no shame in reaching out for support, and a range of effective treatments, including light therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and medication, can help. Winter, like every other season, is a part of life’s rhythm. And in the heart of winter, let’s find our own warmth, our own joy, and our own reasons to celebrate.
