The event brought together over 70 farmers from various parts of Budgam district to enhance their understanding of weather-resilient farming practices. Dr. Latief, the event coordinator, introduced participants to the ongoing projects under the Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) initiative. He emphasised the importance of the Agro-Met Field Unit in delivering real-time weather-based agro-advisories, which assist farmers in adapting to the valley’s dynamic climatic conditions. Dr. Latief highlighted how these advisories help mitigate weather-related risks, protecting crops and improving agricultural outcomes.
Young Professional (YP) Dr. Mohd Ayoub Malik provided an in-depth overview of the GKMS scheme, explaining its SMS-based agro-advisory service. He guided farmers on registering for the service, which offers timely weather forecasts and actionable recommendations for sowing, irrigation, pest management, and other critical farming operations. The programme featured an interactive session where farmers voiced their concerns and received tailored advice from experts on crop management challenges. The event was met with widespread appreciation, with farmers praising the organisers for empowering them with scientific approaches to weather-resilient farming.
Such initiatives underscore the commitment of agricultural institutions in Kashmir to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the challenges of climate change, ensuring sustainable and profitable agriculture in the region. This collaborative effort between AMFU Srinagar and KVK Budgam reflects a forward-looking approach to fostering resilience and sustainability in the farming community.
