Srinagar, Oct 07: In a resounding declaration of commitment to the preservation of its unique ecological heritage and environmental conservation, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha of Jammu and Kashmir asserted that the administration is dedicated to striking a delicate balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Walk for Wildlife’ Walkathon, part of Wildlife Week 2023, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised the unwavering dedication of the Jammu and Kashmir administration towards safeguarding its rich ecological heritage. The event, a five-kilometre Walkathon, saw the participation of prominent citizens, wildlife enthusiasts, eco-club members, volunteers, NCC cadets, and a large number of students.
The Lieutenant Governor underscored the unwavering dedication of the Jammu and Kashmir administrations to the preservation of its unique and ecologically rich heritage while striving for economic growth and environmental conservation in harmony.
He urged for community-led initiatives to protect biodiversity and wildlife, emphasizing that safeguarding the environment is a collective responsibility. He called upon every citizen and youth to become a ‘Wildlife and Environment Mitra’ and promote sustainable lifestyles within society.
Sinha also highlighted the efforts of the administration, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to promote the integrated development of wildlife habitats and encourage eco-tourism and green economy practices. He shared promising news about the revival and completion of the Hangul Breeding Centre in Tral, which had languished since 2008. This accomplishment has led to an increase in the Hangul population, a rare and endangered species, and the addition of two new RAMSAR sites in 2022.
Moreover, the Lieutenant Governor celebrated the sighting of over 13 lakh migratory birds in the region last year. He commended the Department of Wildlife Protection for its proactive efforts in mitigating human-animal conflicts and ensuring the safety of human lives, property, and livestock.
During the event, LG Sinha also unveiled a short film titled “J&K Wildlife Chronicles” and released a poster from the Wildlife Protection Department, further emphasizing the importance of wildlife conservation in the region.
