Ganderbal, Apr 06: Locals in this central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district complain that the prices of food items, especially fruits and vegetables, have increased in the ongoing holy month of Ramadan.
The complaints have poured from Wusan, Kangan, Bonizil, Harripora, Kangan, Murgund, Gund, Rayil, Kullan and Gagangeer areas of Ganderbal, with people expressing resentment against the authorities for not ensuring the essential items are sold at the government-fixed rates.
“The district administration’s claims that people will be provided better facilities in Ramadan remain only on papers, while the ground reality is that the prices of food and other items have skyrocketed,” they said.
They alleged that the vegetables like potatoes are being sold at Rs 40 per kg, tomatoes Rs 40, peas Rs 50 to 60, and onions Rs 50, while the meat is being sold at Rs 600 to 650.
The market checking squads are nowhere visible in our areas and the shopkeepers are taking advantage of it.
They alleged that the wholesalers in Parimpora Mandi themselves hike the vegetable rates and the shopkeepers further increase the prices.
The people have appealed to the district administration to look into the matter.
