Baramulla, Jan 30: Two residential houses were partially damaged in Mohura, Uri after a branch of Chinar tree crashed on them causing damage to the properties amid heavy snowfall in Baramulla district of north Kashmir on Monday.
The houses belong to Ghulam Hassan Khan and Jahangeer Ahmed Khan of Mohura, Uri.
An official said that the inmates of the houses remained safe and a team from the Revenue Department arrived at the scene to assess the damage.
Fresh snowfall in the Baramulla district disrupted daily life, with scores of villages in the upper regions of Uri, Rafiabad, and Kandi cut off from the district headquarters.
Locals expressed dissatisfaction with the blocked roads and lack of snow clearance from the administration.
Passengers from Rafiabad, Uri, and Kandi were left stranded in Baramulla town.
The Tangmarg area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district received one and half feet of fresh snow, leading to an increase in tourist influx in Gulmarg.
The Gulmarg-Tangmarg Road was made motorable, and a snow clearance operation was carried out in Gulmarg to allow tourists to enjoy the sightseeing.
Kaiser Ahmed Wani, Mechanical Engineer Gulmarg told Rising Kashmir that the Gulmarg Tangmarg Road was made motorable throughout the day and a night operation will be started to keep the busy road clear.
“Our three snow cutters, and 15 other machines cleared the road from Narbal to Gulmarg bowl throughout the day,” he said.
The Mechanical Division in Baramulla deployed 26 snow clearance machines to ensure road connectivity.
Executive Engineer Mechanical Division Baramulla Mohammad Maqbool Dar told Rising Kashmir that the important roads were cleared on Monday morning.
“We started the process at 3 in the morning but due to continuous snowfall, the snow accumulation hindered the process. We are starting night operations so that roads will be cleared for smooth movement of traffic,” he added.
Locals however said that the inner roads leading to villages in various areas of Baramulla were not cleared of snow.
The Executive Engineer of Mechanical Division Baramulla urged locals not to park their vehicles on the road to avoid hindrance for snow clearance staff.
The fresh snowfall also disrupted electricity supply in many parts of north Kashmir.
An official of KPDCL said that despite the extreme cold, the field teams of KPDCL were patrolling the faulty lines throughout the day restoring electricity by the evening.
