Srinagar, Aug 11: The Urban Local Bodies of Kashmir have started bio-mining of legacy waste at the dumping sites of the municipalities. It also installed the machinery through which the existing solid waste and the land of the dumping sites of six municipalities will get fully cleaned within six months.
An official from the ULB Kashmir told Rising Kashmir that they have already tendered the disposal of the legacy waste land reclamation through a bio-mining process into six municipalities of the Kashmir division.
Presently, the bio-mining legacy waste process has been started at the dumping sites of two municipal committees, which include Pahalgam and Tral, he said.
After these two dumping sites will get fully cleared, these machines will also be shifted to other four dumping sites of the municipal committees, which include Shopian, Pampore, Anantnag, and Bijbehara, where the bio-mining of the legacy waste will also be started, the official said.
“Under this bio-mining process, all the dumping sites of six municipalities will get fully cleaned within six months, and this land can be also used for other purposes,” he said, adding, “Through this bio-mining process, we are getting two kinds of legacy waste, which include bio-soil and recycled derived fuel (RDF).”
“The bio-soil can be used for agricultural and vegetable cultivation purposes and can be provided to the farmers free of charge. It is also good for Agricultural lands. Refused Derived Fuel (RDF) can be used as co-fuel in cement kilns and power projects,” he added.
During this year, the Urban Local Bodies of Kashmir have made functional nine waste treatment units in 10 municipalities, where all the waste is properly processed in a scientific way through various machines installed in the solid waste management centres. The ULBs are also going to construct waste management centres in the other 30 municipal committees of the valley till the next financial year, 2024, the official said.
