Srinagar, May 22: In a landmark medical achievement, the Department of Urology and Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care at the Super Speciality Hospital, Government Medical College Srinagar, have successfully treated two 7 & 8-month-old infants with renal calculi using Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).
The groundbreaking procedure marks the first time such young patients have undergone ESWL for a 10mm/12mm renal stone at the institution.
Spokesperson GMC Srinagar says the infant’s, diagnosed with renal calculus, faced potential complications that could have severely impacted kidney function and overall health.
“Traditional surgical approaches posed considerable risks given the patient’s age and size. However, the multidisciplinary team of experts at our hospital opted for the minimally invasive ESWL procedure, which uses high-energy shock waves to break the kidney stone into smaller, passable fragments” he said.
Prof. (Dr) Syed Sajjad Nazir, Head of the Department of Urology, led the urology team in this delicate procedure. “This successful treatment underscores our commitment to providing cutting-edge, patient centered care. The ESWL procedure offers a safer alternative to conventional surgery, particularly for our youngest and most vulnerable patients. We are proud to have achieved such a milestone in pediatric urological care,” he said.
Prof. (Dr) Hina Bashir Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, ensured the infant’s safety and comfort throughout the procedure.
“Administering anesthesia to such a young patient presents unique challenges, but our team expertise and meticulous planning were key to the successful outcome,” Dr. Nusrat Jehan, Dr. Mubashir and Dr. Baby Shahnaz Jeelani from the Anesthesia Department explained. “Our collaborative approach with the urology department was crucial in managing these case’s effectively,” they said.
Dr Tanveer Iqbal (Associate Professor Urology) said that the procedures were completed without complications, and the infant’s were discharge after one day.
He said the success not only highlights the advanced capabilities of the Super Speciality Hospital GMC Srinagar but also opens new avenues for treating pediatric patients with renal calculi in calculli
Prof. (Dr) Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal of Government Medical College Srinagar*, commented on the significance of this achievement.
“This is a remarkable advancement for our institution and for pediatric healthcare in the region. It demonstrates our hospital’s capacity to handle complex and rare cases with innovative solutions. Medical Superintendent of SSH, Dr. Jahangir Bakshi said the pioneering treatment exemplifies the hospital’s dedication to excellence and innovation in medical care, setting a new standard for pediatric urology.
