Jammu, Jan 20: A seven-day training program on scientific beekeeping, organised under the Apiculture Development Scheme and the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM), began Monday at Baba Jitto Kisan Kendra, Jammu.
The initiative aims to empower 50 prospective beekeepers from Jammu and Samba districts by raising awareness and enhancing skills in beekeeping. The training was inaugurated by S. Arvinder Singh Reen, Director Agriculture Jammu, who emphasised beekeeping’s potential to generate income and employment opportunities. He encouraged the Jammu’s youth to embrace beekeeping, noting the area’s favourable agro-climatic conditions, rich biodiversity, and growing honey demand due to its medicinal and nutritional benefits.
Director Reen also highlighted the department’s commitment to supporting beekeepers through advanced training programs, exposure visits to national institutes and financial assistance for optimising honey production, including the migration of bee colonies. The program will cover a wide range of topics, including seasonal management, pest and disease control, value addition, and marketing strategies. Trainees will also receive practical, hands-on training at the Apiculture Demonstration cum Training Centre in Chimney Chak, Jammu.
