Pulwama, Mar 11: A T20 cricket tournament was held in Samboora village, Pampore area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, in memory of a slain officer of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The inaugural match of the T20 tournament was played on Saturday between Wuyan Stars and Samboora Warriors at the Samboora cricket stadium.
The tournament is being played on a knockout basis, with around 16 teams from the police district of Awantipora participating. The tournament is being held in memory of sub-inspector (SI) Farooq Ahmad Mir, a native of Samboora village, who was shot dead on June 18, 2022.
Abdul Gani Mir, the father of the slain police officer, expressed his gratitude to SP Awantipora and other officers for organizing the ‘Shaheed Farooq Memorial T20 Cricket Tournament.’
“I am thankful to the Jammu and Kashmir Police for remembering my son and organizing a cricket tournament in his memory,” said Gani. He added that his son was killed, but the officers kept his name alive by paying tribute to him in this way.
Senior Superintendent of Police for Awantipora, Ajaz Ahmad Zargar, said that he was pleased to see the overwhelming response from the people in the area to the initiative taken by Jammu and Kashmir for youth engagement under the civic action program.
“We will try our best to involve youth in constructive engagement,” he said. He assured sports enthusiasts that the Jammu and Kashmir police would come up with more such initiatives and that they would be organizing another cricket tournament at Awantipora, followed by a road race. Zargar added that the police would provide a platform for young boys and girls to hone their skills and showcase their talent.
