Srinagar, Nov 06: Government College for Women, Srinagar Monday organized an awareness programme on ‘Polycystic Ovary Syndrome’ (PCOS).
Prof. (Dr.) Ashraf Ganie, a leading endocrinologist cautioned against dietary choices that could lead to PCOS and recommended avoiding certain foods. PCOS, he warned, can manifest as sleep apnoea, diabetes, acne, hair loss, and unwanted hair growth.
Similarly, Dr. Doulhat delved into the depths of PCOS, a rampant endocrine disorder affecting one in five women of reproductive age. “PCOS, characterized by irregular cycles and polycystic ovaries, often brings insulin resistance and obesity in tow. Shockingly, 36% of Indian women suffer from PCOS, casting an economic burden of around $4,000,000,” she said.
Prof. Natasha Thakur, a General Surgeon from SKIMS, Soura revealed a disconcerting trend – breast cancer, once associated with older age, is now striking younger women.
Prof. Thakur attributed this shift to lifestyle factors, specifically urbanization, delayed childbearing, and unhealthy diets rich in saturated fats.
Prof. Thakur stressed the role of saturated fats in the modern diet, cautioning against the hidden ingredients in popular fast foods.
She further highlighted the lack of physical exercise in the lives of young women, exacerbated by sedentary habits.
Women were urged to examine themselves regularly. Prof. Thakur left the audience with a call to action, emphasizing the importance of lifestyle modification, including exercise, maintaining a healthy body weight, and adopting a diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
Prof. Thakur encouraged young women not to delay marriage or pregnancy, stressing the significance of breastfeeding.
