Srinagar, Nov 25: Authorities at Srinagar International Airport have announced the successful installation of an advanced Instrument Landing System (ILS-II), a major technological upgrade aimed at ensuring seamless flight operations during low-visibility conditions, such as fog or adverse winter weather.
Javed Anjum, Director of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Srinagar, told Rising Kashmir that the advanced ILS-II system was commissioned in August 2024. This state-of-the-art technology is expected to significantly improve the airport’s operational capabilities, minimizing disruptions and ensuring safe and efficient air travel during the winter season.
“The ILS-II system will facilitate smooth landings and takeoffs even in challenging weather conditions, making winter travel more reliable. We are optimistic about achieving near-zero cancellations or delays this season. It will enhance both convenience and safety for passengers,” Anjum said.
He added that last winter, despite foggy and snowy conditions, the airport saw a 99% improvement in flight cancellations. “With the ILS-II in place, we are expecting zero cancellations or delays this winter,” he said.
The new system significantly reduces the minimum visibility required for safe flight operations at the airport, currently set at approximately 1,300 meters. Anjum explained, “We have invested in cutting-edge navigation and landing technologies to align with the increasing passenger traffic and to ensure minimal disruptions to flight schedules.”
Over the past two years, the airport has undergone extensive upgrades under the Indian Air Force’s “Modernization of Airport Facilities and Infrastructure (MAFI)” scheme. These enhancements aim to meet international safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
“This system ensures uninterrupted flight operations during foggy weather, which has historically caused significant cancellations and delays in winter,” the director added.
The airport is now equipped with advanced systems such as the Doppler Very High-Frequency Omni Range (DVOR), Non-Directional Beacon (NDB), ILS, X-Ray Baggage Inspection System (XBIS), Inline Baggage Screening System (ILBS), and Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) for enhanced security.
“These improvements ensure that the airport meets global safety and security benchmarks while providing a seamless experience for passengers. AAI remains committed to enhancing air navigation, passenger safety, and operational efficiency at Srinagar International Airport,” Anjum said.
“Our goal is to minimise disruption to flight operations, particularly during the challenging winter months. We continuously work to upgrade our facilities to accommodate growing air traffic and provide a world-class travel experience,” he concluded.
