Srinagar, Jan 06: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is intending to build 15 underground bins in various areas throughout the city in order to improve the waste management system.
A senior official from the corporation revealed that these underground bins will be put in place in the city’s downtown and other locations since stray dogs are removing trash from the higher bins. In many locations, this open garbage removing sited is also contributing to traffic issues, he said.
He asserted that discussions with professionals and specialists about how to handle the scattered debris in significant and susceptible places of town have been going on for a sizable quantity of time.
The SMC has reportedly been quite concerned about the dumpsters positioned all around the city as many households dump their trash in these dumpsters, promoting stray dogs to create a nuisance to surrounding homeowners and passersby.
The SMC has ensured door-to-door collection in key areas of the city while keeping waste and other garbage contained in an organized manner, which has reduced challenges for the department.
The officer went on to say that the department is also planning to install some big dustbins at congested marketplaces in Srinagar, which include commercial hub Lal Chowk and several other main markets.
“At present, our staff’s working hours are largely consumed by cleaning up the trash that has been spilt throughout the day in the same area. It was also getting harder to keep track of how frequently the trash cans were filled. After the installation of underground bins in the city, there will be less time-consuming work,” the senior official of the corporation told Rising Kashmir.
29 locations have been identified by the SMC for the installation of underground bins for the treatment of trash using contemporary methods. The official said, “On the one hand, it will meet the growing need for handling trash and garbage, but on the other hand, it will protect city inhabitants from catching diseases.”
Confirming the installation of 15 underground bins in Srinagar, SMC Commissioner Athar Amir Khan said that they have identified some locations where these bins would be installed. He stated that “all upper-ground bins would be replaced with underground bins shortly.”
