SKUAST-K’s Division of Fruit Science achieves milestone with three patents

Srinagar, June 27: Three scientists from the Division of Fruit Science at SKUAST-Kashmir have earned patents for their innovative contribution to the field of horticulture.
These accolades underscore the Division’s role in advancing temperate horticulture and promoting innovation in the field, the SKUAST-K said in a press release, adding that the university has earned 30 patents so far and 13 in the year 2024.
The first patent was earned by Dr Nowsheen Nazir, Associate Professor for her groundbreaking work on a novel machine designed to transform kiwifruit into versatile gummy products. This innovation promises enhanced fruit utilisation in the food processing sector.
The second patent awarded to Dr Ashaq Pandit, Professor and Head of the Division of Fruit Science, for developing a specialised rooting medium aimed at scaling up the propagation of apple rootstock is jointly held by PhD scholar Dr Mehraj-ud-din Sheikh and team. This initiative addresses critical challenges and opportunities in rootstock multiplication, the university said.
Dr Rafia Mushtaq, a student innovator under the mentorship of Dr A.R. Malik earned the third patent for her innovative electromechanical sensor-based pruning secateur. This development marks a significant advancement in precision horticultural practices.
Professor Nazir Ahmed Ganie, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST Kashmir, congratulated the division for the remarkable achievement, emphasizing that these patents are a testament to the dedication and hard work of faculty and students. He highlighted SKUAST’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in agricultural sciences, crucial for the region’s economic and social development.
Dean, Faculty of Horticulture and DirectorResearch SKUAST Kashmir congratulated the awardees, noting that these accomplishments further solidify SKUAST Kashmir’s reputation as a hub of cutting-edge research and innovations.
