Srinagar, May 20: SKUAST-K on Friday distributed high-yielding maize seed (SMC7) among the farmers of the Chanchmarg area of Shopian, under the participatory seed village programme of NSP which was jointly organised by AICRP on seed crops, National Seed Project (NSP) SKUAST-K in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Shopian.
Dr Shabeer Ahmad Ganie, Scientist Plant Protection, deliberated upon the package of practices to be adopted for the SMC7 maize variety. Senior scientist and Head KVK Shopian Dr Zaffar Afroz Badri stressed upon adoption and dissemination of the high yielding university released a variety of maize (Shalimar Maize Composite 7) and explained the benefits of the SMC7 Maize variety and said that the variety is climate resilient, less susceptible to diseases and has potential to tolerate adverse weather conditions.
Dr Shaiq Ahmad Ganai, Scientist, Food Technology deliberated upon the nutritional importance of maize. He discussed various value-added products of the maize. Dr Bilal Ahmad Zargar, Scientist, Agriculture Extension discussed the economic importance of the maize. Two quintals of maize seed SMC7 variety were distributed among the farmers free of cost, the SKUAST-K said in a statement.
