Bandipora : For the first time, the Sheep Husbandry Department, Bandipora has created a frozen semen bank facility for small ruminants at Kunan village of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
District sheep Husbandry officer Bandipora, Dr Showkat told Rising Kashmir that the facility has currently availability of semen of four improved Dairy goat breeds namely Jamnapari, Sirrohi, Beetal and Barberi.
He said that these breeds of goats are having high productivity with an average milk yield of 4 litres and high fecundity producing mostly twins and triplets.
Dr Showkat said that the Department with the support of District administration Bandipora has introduced artificial insemination technique in small ruminants for the first time in the entire UT using frozen semen.
He said that the technique has been standardized and has started showing results in farmers flocks. The technique will help to accelerate genetic gains in local inferior herds and increase farmers income, he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mohd Parvana told Rising Kashmir that the credit goes to the department for inducting this technology among goats as indeed it will help the farmers to boost the economy.
