Jammu, Mar 16: Yogesh Sawhney, former minister and senior Congress leader, has voiced disappointment with the Election Commission of India (ECI) for not conducting assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir.
In a statement, Sawhney expressed concern over the prolonged delay in announcing overdue assembly elections, saying it has left the people of J&K disillusioned.
“Despite directives from the Supreme Court and the slogan of ‘One Nation One Election,’ the restoration of democracy in Jammu & Kashmir remains elusive,” he said. Sawhney stressed the significance of democratic processes in the region, emphasizing that the delay in conducting state elections further exacerbates the disenfranchisement of the populace.
The Congress leader lamented the missed opportunity for the people of J&K to actively participate in shaping their governance through democratic means. He voiced concerns over the erosion of democratic principles in the region and called for urgent measures to address the electoral impasse.
The former minister highlighted the lack of proactive steps from both the Election Commission and the Central government in resolving the electoral deadlock in Jammu & Kashmir. He urged immediate action to ensure that the voices of the people are heard through free and fair elections, reinstating the democratic framework crucial for the region’s progress and stability.
