Rs 70 fixed as ‘Sadaqat-ul-Fitr’

Srinagar, March 18: Sadaqat-ul-Fitr, also known as Zakat-ul-Fitr, the amount has been fixed at Rs 70 per person. The Grand Mufti, Jammu, and Kashmir Nasir-ul-Islam on Saturday urged people to pay this before Eid for the interest of the needy and poor.
The Grand Mufti said that Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is a responsibility due to every Muslim and that it is due before the start of the Eid prayer but may be offered as early as the commencement of the fasting month of Ramadan. According to Mufti Nasir-ul Islam, it is Wajib (required) of a person who has assets with a value equal to the Nisab.
“According to the Sadaqat-al-Fitr judgment, a person who owns 7 1/2 tola of gold (93 grams or 312 milligrams), 52 1/2 tola of silver (653 grams or 184 milligrams), or any other kind of asset qualifies as the owner of Nisab. Each person should donate the equivalent of 1,760 kg of wheat to charity, “he added.
The amount of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is the same for everyone, regardless of their different income brackets. The Grand Mufti said that Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is a duty required of every Muslim and that it becomes obligatory to pay it before the beginning of Eid prayers and could be given from the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
Mufti Nasir-ul Islam said that it is Wajib (mandatory) upon such a person who owns assets that equal the value of the Nisab.
He said the Fitr amount was fixed after consensus with the Ulema from Kashmir and Jammu regions, respectively.
