Rainfall brings relief from heatwave in Jammu

MeT predicts wet spell in Kashmir from today

Srinagar, June 29: A moderate spell of rainfall on Saturday brought down temperature several notches below the normal bringing relief from the scorching heat wave in Jammu region. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has also predicted rains in Kashmir during the next 24 hours.

Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that during the past 24 hours, Udhampur received 47.9mm, Katra 28.9 mm, Jammu 14.4 mm of rainfall.

He said moderate rain was reported over Poonch, Rajouri,South Kashmir, North & NW,Ganderbal-Sonamarg axis, Baltal-HolyCave, Pahalgam-Holy Cave,Banihal-Batote. Few places of South Kashmir received moderate showers for a brief period.

Similarly in Jammu region, rain/thundershower was reported in Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, RS pora, Bishna,Surinsar Lake,  Reasi ,  Udhampur & Samba till late Saturday evening.

“We are expecting the possibility of light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms at many places of Jammu division towards late night and early Sunday morning till Monday,” he said.

Regarding the forecast of Kashmir region, Dr. Mukhtar said that a brief spell of rain and thundershower is expected at few places of Kashmir division towards afternoon and late evening.

“Between 1-7th July, there will be gradual rise in rainfall intensity from 2nd July onwards with possibility of intermittent light to moderate rainfall at many places. There is a possibility of heavy showers at a few places that cannot be ruled out,” he said.

Meanwhile the MeT has issued advisory stating that there is possibility of flash floods in few hilly areas of Jammu division, landslides & mudslides at few vulnerable places.

Meanwhile hot and humid weather conditions continued in Kashmir on Saturday.

As per MeT data, Srinagar recorded 30.89°C as maximum temperature and 20.6°C as minimum temperature. Ski resort Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest with a high of 24.8 degrees Celsius and 12.8 as minimum temperature.

Health resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 25.7 C as maximum temperature and 13.5°C as minimum temperature respectively.

Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 31.2°C. Banihal recorded 30.0°C as maximum temperature and 21.6 as minimum temperatures.

After rainfall, Jammu recorded 36.6°C as maximum temperature and 23.1 as minimum temperatures, Katra settled at 32.0 and 21.6 respectively.

As per the traffic spokesman  said from the past 24 hours, there was slow movement observed on NH-44 due to breakdown of 06 HMVs, single lane traffic at Dalwas, Mehad and between Marog & Kishtwri Pather.

“On Saturday, subject to fair weather and better road conditions SANJY convoy /LMVs Passenger, Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) viz from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing this traffic.

On Kishtwar- Sinthan- Anantnag NH-244, Vehicular movement (only LMVs) on Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road shall be allowed from both sides viz from Anantnag towards Kishtwar and vice versa. These vehicles shall be allowed from Daksum and Chingam (Chatroo) between 0900 hrs to 1300 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing, it said.

On Sunday traffic from Kargil towards Srinagar will remain suspended due to Sarhad Shauryathon along Srinagar-Leh highway.

“However, subject to fair weather and good road conditions,only one way traffic from Srinagar towards Kargil for both LMVs/HMVs on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road shall be allowed,” it said.

The spokesman said that LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil at 1400 hrs to 1800 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timings.

Similarly on Mughal road, vehicular movement (LMVs followed by HMVs upto 10 tyre) on Mughal road shall be allowed from both sides viz. from Poonch towards Shopian and vice versa.

“These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgalla (Buffliaz) and Herpora (Shopian) at 0600 hrs. upto 1800 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut of timings,” it said.
