Srinagar, Nov 13: Srinagar police on Wednesday refuted claims made by Kashmir University (KU) Vice Chancellor Nilofar Khan that her vehicle was attacked at Pathan Colony in Zakura on the outskirts of Srinagar.
A day after the VC alleged being targeted by gunfire while returning from a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, police issued a statement clarifying that.
Khan, the first female head of Kashmir University, appointed in May 2022, alleged that a bullet hit her vehicle around 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening, leading her security detail to fire back in response.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Nilofar Khan said, “We suspected there was an attack on us, which is why my security detail opened fire. “Thankfully, I was unharmed,” Khan said, adding that the police should now investigate the incident.
However, Srinagar Police clarified that after conducting a thorough search of the area, they found no bullet marks or physical evidence to support the claims. According to the police, the area was carefully examined, but nothing corroborating the alleged attack was discovered.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Srinagar Police stated that after thoroughly searching the area, they found no evidence to support the Vice Chancellor’s account. Police teams sent to the scene reportedly found no bullet marks or other signs of an attack. “The report about attack on the VC of Kashmir University last evening near Zakura could not be corroborated, factoring in all possible circumstances,” the police said.
The police further stated that witnesses in the area, including officers at a nearby checkpoint, reported hearing no gunfire other than the rounds fired by Khan’s security personnel, who seemed to have responded to a perceived threat. “The investigation is ongoing, but initial findings show no evidence of an attack.”
