Prime Minister Narendra Modi lambasted the political families in Jammu and Kashmir by launching a scathing attack on the opposition parties for destroying the peace. He accused these parties of preparing the ground for subversion and secession that was exploited by the enemies of the nation from across the borders. Leading the election campaign for the BJP in Doda, the Prime Minister has kick started the political activity in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban. He has initiated the campaign for the 24 seats in the first phase of the Assembly Elections. He reminded the people of the turbulence that engulfed the Chenab area during the peak of terrorism that affected the lives of the common people and led to the loss of their livelihood and targeting of the innocent people by the terrorists. He underlined that during the last ten years there has been a sharp decline in terrorism. He substantiated this by saying that the stones that were pelted on the police and security forces are now being used to build the New Jammu and Kashmir(Naya Jammu Kashmir). He invited the people to work for this goal to bring peace and stability in the region. Describing the atmosphere of change he said that there was a time when UPA Government’s Home Minister was frightened to visit the Lal Chowk. Describing the rationale to field the young candidate, Shagun Parihar who is a terror victim, he said that his party is determined to make Jammu and Kashmir terror free. He addressed the Kashmiri Pandit issue as well by saying that the community has faced endless atrocities in more than three decade long forced exile from Kashmir and recalled the martyrdom of Late Tika Lal Taploo, a top leader of BJP in Kashmir who was killed by terrorists in 1989 on 14th September. He said it was the BJP that raised the voice for justice to Kashmiri Pandits. In his speech he also underlined that BJP’s election manifesto for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections has promised to initiate Tika Lal Taploo Scheme for Return and Rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandit Hindus. He also announced that the BJP will bring White Paper on terror victims to deliver justice to them. It is pertinent to mention that before the Prime Minister’s arrival, Panun Kashmir the frontline Kashmiri Pandit organisation has given a call for the boycott of the Assembly Elections. It has said that genocide and casting of vote cannot go together. Explaining the rationale for the election boycott, it has said that when the community is outside their homeland and lost their homes and hearts, how can their constituency be demarcated? It has asked the Central Government to address the reversal of their genocide as enshrined in the Margdarshan Resolution-1991 and provide guarantee for their non refoulement by passing the Genocide and Atrocities and Prevention Bill (2020) that has been submitted by the organisation to the Prime Minister and the Members of Parliament. Moreover, Panun Kashmir and various other Kashmiri Pandit organisations had organised a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi the same day the Prime Minister was addressing the masses in Jammu and Kashmir to observe the 14th September as the Martyrs Day. Only time will tell whether the Prime Minister’s mention of the Kashmiri Pandit issue in his speech is going to make the community vote in this Assembly Elections or will they boycott this election as they did in 1996 to highlight their demands? The Prime Minister’s address makes it clear that the Central Government wants a peaceful Jammu and Kashmir free from violence and terrorism. And the prime thrust will be to address the issues of the terror victims and their return and rehabilitation. Jammu and Kashmir is eagerly waiting for the outcome of the Assembly Elections. So that democracy thrives to make the lives of people secure and safe.
