Srinagar, Mar 14: People have complained of skyrocketing prices of essential commodities, two days after the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.
Reports reveal a significant surge in the cost of basic necessities, including mutton, chicken, and vegetables, leading to widespread discontent among the people.
Concerned citizens have voiced grievances over the lack of market-checking squads, traditionally deployed to curb price gouging during Ramadan.
Ghulam Nabi, a local of Srinagar, lamented the hardships faced by people as they contend with inflated prices amidst festivities.
Residents from various areas echoed similar sentiments, decrying the unreasonable rates set by wholesalers and shopkeepers. They said despite assurances from the administration, promises of improved facilities remain unfulfilled.
The absence of monitoring mechanisms has left many vulnerable to exploitation, with reports indicating exorbitant prices for meat, chicken, and essential vegetables. People have expressed dismay over the absence of displayed price lists, alleging widespread profiteering by vendors.
Amidst mounting discontent, they have appealed to the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to urgently address the issue and alleviate the financial burden on Kashmiri households during the sacred month.
