Jammu, 22 Feb: The doctors at the Super Speciality Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu achieved yet another milestone of performing one of the complex procedures for implantation of aortic valve called Trans Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) in a high-risk and comorbid patient.
The team of doctors comprised Dr Sushil Sharma, Dr Arvind Kohli and Dr Prashant Dwivedi. This procedure is performed in only some of the best cardiac centres in India, the hospital said in a statement.
“During this minimally invasive procedure, a new valve is inserted without removing the old, damaged valve. The new valve is placed inside the diseased valve. The surgery may be called a transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) or transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Somewhat similar to placing a stent in an artery, the TAVR approach delivers a fully collapsible replacement valve to the valve site through a catheter,” the statement said.
Once the new valve is expanded, it pushes the old valve leaflets out of the way and the tissue in the replacement valve takes over the job of regulating blood flow. This procedure is available for people with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis at low, intermediate or high risk for standard valve replacement surgery.
The patient Ramesh Chander Sharma, a resident of Damana, Jammu, was suffering from severe Aortic Valve Stenosis. He had already undergone the CABG operation and due to the associated comorbid conditions of the patient, he was in dire need of this high-end procedure for saving his life and he couldn’t travel to any other institute for getting this procedure done. “However, once again Dr Sushil Sharma, Dr Arvind Kohli, Dr Prashant Dwivedi along with the team of resident doctors, CTVA team cardiac cath lab technicians and paramedical staff made this feat possible and provided a sigh of relief to the patient by performing TAVR. Now, he is doing well and will be discharged in a day or two,” the hospital said.
“It is the smile of a patient after getting relieved of suffering which keeps him/her going,” Dr Sushil Sharma said, adding that he will continue to perform such complex procedures in the future so that patients don’t have to suffer from inoperable and high-risk procedures where the options only are surgical intervention.
