Pulwama, Nov 13: In a transformative initiative, Pashu Sakhis (PS) trained under the Deen Dayal Antodaya Yojna National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) are emerging as crucial grassroots support for dairy farmers in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Approximately 93 members of Self Help Groups under NRLM Pulwama underwent a comprehensive 15-day training at SKUAST-K, facilitated by resource persons from the National Dairy Development Board, Gujarat.
Arshid Ahmad Bhat, District Programme Manager, NRLM Pulwama, said that these trained PS members play a pivotal role in supporting dairy farmers by providing services such as disease awareness, management, vaccination, insemination, and feed conservation.
“In their multifaceted approach, Pashu Sakhis liaison with the Animal Husbandry Department, ensuring a seamless flow of information and resources, supplying inputs and initiating 100 percent coverage of animals under insurance schemes, ” he said.
Yaseema, a dedicated Pashu Sakhi from the Newa Block of Pulwama, shared insights into her experience, noting her involvement in the scheme since September 2021.
Pashu Sakhis, she explained, act as the vital link between dairy farmers and the Animal Husbandry Department.
Functioning as the first point of contact for distressed dairy farmers, Yaseema highlighted the immediate response they provide.
“When we receive a call, we visit the dairy farmers at their place of residence to treat minor injuries or illnesses,” she said, adding, “In more serious situations, we collaborate with specialists from the Animal Husbandry Department to seek expert advice.”
Yaseema’s responsibilities extend to overseeing three villages, where she engages with local dairy farmers, offering counsel on ration balancing, enhancing milk quality, disease management, and various other aspects.
