Anantnag, Oct 07: Nomadic Tribal community and their livestock are being transported from districts to the winter capital – Jammu. 609 trucks have transported more than 35000 livestock from Kulgam and Anantnag, officials said.
In a collaborative endeavour, District Sheep Husbandry Anantnag and Kulgam, in partnership with the Tribal Affairs Department and District Administrations, are spearheading the transportation of livestock and families belonging to Nomadic Tribal families.
Every year, as winter approaches in Kashmir, the nomadic pastoral families embark on their seasonal journey from the meadows of Kashmir to the plains of Jammu. What used to be a journey of weeks has now become a streamlined process, taking just one or two days.
According to officials from Anantnag, since the initiation of this initiative in this season, 550 trucks have successfully made the journey to Jammu, ferrying a remarkable 33,000 head of livestock from diverse regions within Anantnag. Alongside, a total of 370 families have seized the opportunity to embark on this transformative journey, accompanying their invaluable livestock.
As of the latest data shared by Sheep Husbandry Anantnag, a staggering 3,200 trucks stand ready, pre-booked by 1,540 families who have registered for this migration.
Similarly, from Kulgam, 59 trucks carrying 55 families have been transported to the Jammu plains. In total, there are 240 families in these groups, accompanied by a livestock of 2735 animals. These pastoralists engage in seasonal migration, continuing a tradition that has been passed down through generations.
Mohammad Altaf, a pastoral nomad, told Rising Kashmir that the provision of transportation has significantly eased their journey.
“The availability of vehicles is a major boon, and we are sincerely grateful to the authorities for this initiative. We were able to travel from Kulgam to Jammu with remarkable ease,” he said.
